Wat Sangkas Rattanakiri
Located at the foot of Khao Sakae Krang mountain, a staircase with 449 steps leads to the summit, the site of one of Thailand's grandest "Tak Bat Tevo" (offering food to monks descending from the Tavatimsa heaven) ceremonies. Inside the temple is enshrined Phra Phuttha Mongkol Saksit, a sacred Buddha image revered as the guardian of Uthai Thani, possessing beautiful Sukhothai-style features. At the summit is a pavilion housing a replica of the Buddha's footprint and a large bell that visitors must ring to spread their fame far and wide.
Wat Uposatharam
Wat Uposatharam, or Wat Bot, showcases the charm of three architectural eras. Experience tranquility by the Sakae Krang River at Wat Uposatharam and admire its pristine white octagonal pavilion and architecture that seamlessly blends Thai, Chinese, and Western styles. This ancient temple, a landmark of Uthai Thani, built during the early Rattanakosin period, boasts several unique features: the octagonal pavilion, a European-Chinese fusion architectural style with vibrant and unique stucco carvings; three stupas representing different artistic styles (Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, and Rattanakosin); well-preserved murals from the early Rattanakosin period within the main chapel and vihara depicting Buddhist history; and a replica of the Buddha's footprint, enshrined in a pavilion commemorating King Rama V's royal visit.
Walking Street Trok Rong Ya
Rongya Alley: A nostalgic journey back in time in old wooden houses. From an opium den to an arts and culture street, this former area has been revitalized as a pedestrian street, perfectly preserving the charm of its old wooden buildings. These include old houses that have been converted into cafes, souvenir shops, and small museums showcasing antique items, as well as renowned restaurants offering rare local dishes at friendly prices. The pedestrian street is open every Saturday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Sakae Krang Peak
Take in the breathtaking view of Uthai Thani from the summit of Khao Sakae Krang. This panoramic viewpoint will make you fall in love with this charming small town. See houses, floating rafts, and lush green rice fields – it's considered one of the most beautiful spots in the province to watch both sunrise and sunset. More than just a viewpoint, it's a place of faith, home to many significant landmarks. These include a giant bell, an ancient bell believed to bring fame and good fortune to those who ring it; a statue of Somdej Phra Pathom Chanok, the father of King Rama I, whose birthplace makes Uthai Thani a spiritual center for its people; and a world landmark, one of the main map markers of Thailand, making it a chic check-in spot for geographers.
Hok Sae Tung
Hok Sae Tung, located on Sri Uthai Road, was formerly a vegetarian temple called Hok Han Tua. After World War II, a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner named Lek Lee opened a pharmacy here, changing the name to "Hok Sae Tung." The building is an old teak house, a half-brick, half-wooden structure with a hip roof and brick walls plastered with cement. The ground floor houses antique Chinese medicine cabinets and grinding/preparing equipment, formerly used for selling herbal medicines and as a training ground for apprentice practitioners. The upper floor is a large hall with teak floors and walls adorned with Chinese carvings. In the center of the room is a Chinese-style altar, used as a vegetarian hall. Hok Sae Tung also preserves a wealth of valuable traditional Chinese artifacts, household items, and decorative objects.
Currently, it is open to visitors only during the Vegetarian Festival. However, during normal days, those interested can contact Watthanapaisan Shop in advance at 0-5651-1078.
Wat Pichai Puranaram
Wat Phichai Puranaram is an ancient and important temple in the Uthai Thani municipal area. It is believed to have been built during the late Ayutthaya period. Originally named Wat Krang, its architecture and points of interest include the main chapel, which blends early Rattanakosin styles. The chapel is not large but possesses a simple yet beautiful charm. Inside, it houses a majestic Buddha image in the Maravijaya posture. There is also a large reclining Buddha image (Phra Phuttha Saiyat) with exquisite features, revered by the people of Uthai Thani, and murals depicting stories from the life of Buddha and Thai literature.
Wat Mani Sathit Kapittharam
Wat Maneesathit Kapittharam, or popularly known as Wat Thung Kaeo, is a third-class royal temple of the ordinary type and a highly important temple to the people of Uthai Thani Province. The temple's most prominent feature is its sacred holy water pond. This pond was dug by Phra Ajarn Yaem, who inscribed Khmer incantations on its bottom, transforming its water into holy water. This water has been used in the coronation ceremonies of King Rama VI, King Rama VII, and King Rama X. Another highlight is the five-spired pagoda, built in 1909, approximately 16 meters tall. It houses relics of the Buddha and a statue of Luang Por Yaem, the temple's founder.
Wat Tham Khosok
Wat Tham Khosok, or Wat Rong Kho as it's known locally, is another ancient temple of historical and artistic significance, located within the Uthai Thani municipal area. Its architecture and artwork are outstanding, and the temple is renowned for its craftsmanship from the late Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin periods. The main chapel is a brick and stucco building with a distinctive feature: it has no windows, instead using small ventilation openings – a style popular during the Ayutthaya period to create a peaceful and mystical atmosphere inside. The murals inside the chapel are exceptionally beautiful, painted in tempera paint, depicting stories from the life of Buddha and the Jataka tales, particularly the Maharaja Parvata from the Vessantara Jataka.
Sakae Krang Riverside Morning Market
The Sakae Krang Riverfront Morning Market, or Lan Sakae Market as the locals call it, is situated along the Sakae Krang River. It's one of the few places in Thailand where a dense community of houseboats still lives there. In the early morning, monks paddle their boats to receive alms from villagers along the riverbank, creating a beautiful scene. Furthermore, a bridge (Northern Development Bridge) connects the market to Wat Uposatharam, a beautiful and ancient temple located on the opposite bank.
